Bright berries and blooms! The Cardinal Candy® Viburnum, (Viburnum dilatatum 'Henneke'), is a deciduous shrub with four-season interest! Your Cardinal Candy® has a lot to offer! A Proven Winners® selection, this Viburnum variety is particularly prized by northern gardeners for its cold tolerance, but still maintains all the wonderful ornamental features Viburnum-lovers seek!
The show begins in spring when the 6-inch wide clusters of white flowers bloom, a showy yet elegant beginning to the new season. Dangling scarlet fruits soon follow. The brightly-colored drupes gather together in bunches amid your Viburnum's branches, ripening in late summer/early fall, yet persisting throughout the winter months. Plant with another Viburnum dilatatum for increased pollination and therefore more of those incredible red berries!
The effect of the fruit against the vibrant leaves, and later amid the bare branches are outstanding and your songbirds will enjoy the tasty treat. Even when not in flower or fruit, your Cardinal Candy® is a lovely shrub. Cardinal Candy® Viburnum will grow to 6 feet tall with a 4-foot spread and thrives in USDA zones 5 through 8 beautifully!
Planting and Application:
Use Cardinal Candy® as a foundation planting, or in a winter garden where their splash of color can provide some enjoyment through the dreary months of winter! More upright than wide, these shrubs are ideal hedges for privacy and screening off an eye-sore or blocking a nosy neighbor. Use as backdrops to mixed shrub borders and perennial gardens, or just to create lovely outdoor rooms. Of course, a single Cardinal Candy® specimen will show off all growing season with the display of blooms and berries for your delight!
These shrubs are fantastic native cultivars that are vital food, nectar, shelter, and nesting habitat for birds, pollinators, and wildlife! Create shelterbelts and groupings for songbirds, dense cover and nesting sites, plus food for hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies! Viburnum are caterpillar host plants for many species of moths and Butterflies and songbirds feed these larvae to their hungry chicks!
- White Rounded Flower Clusters
- Vivid Cardinal Red Fruit in Fall
- Textured Deep Green Foliage
- Host Plant, Pollinators, Wildlife Interest & 4-Season Interest

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Plant Viburnum in full sun to partial shade, in nearly any kind of well-drained soil that’s moderately moist. Appreciating mulched beds and an annual pruning immediately after flowering to shape (though you may remove the showy fruit). You can also skip tip pruning and renewal prune only and allow the shrub to produce fruit for birds. Renewal prune removes the largest, thickest stems from the ground every few years. This will rejuvenate your shrub. Leave the young stems in place, which will flower nicely for you next spring.
This Viburnum shrub has improved hardiness over other Viburnum varieties and presents an upright, rounded nature. Cardinal Candy® has no significant disease or insect issues, and although birds and butterflies love it, other wildlife (such as deer), tend to leave it alone.
- Full Sun & Partial Shade
- Widely Adaptable To Moisture
- Tolerates All Types of Well-Drained Soils
- Prune After Flowering
- Cold-Hardy, Deer & Juglone Resistant
Standing out with incredibly brilliant red berries, this cold-hardy shrub that offers ornamental interest for every season, Cardinal Candy® Viburnum is a sensible choice for any home gardener. Choose gorgeous shrubs from NatureHills.com today and get your few favorites delivered to you!
